Google mobile friendly help? Mobilegeddon is April 21st

April 13, 2015

Starting April 21 the date known in SEO & SEM circles as Mobilegeddon will arrive. Google will be expanding their established criteria for earning the Google mobile friendly tag into their mobile search algorithm as a ranking signal per Google’s Webmaster blog and other major online sources. We discussed this mobile friendly label topic on our blog a few months ago as well. Let there be no doubt remaining as to how important this is for your website.

Why Mobilegeddon

This algorithm change will affect mobile searches worldwide and have a significant impact on search results. From this change, users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results optimized for mobile devices. If your business website hasn’t earned the Google mobile friendly label yet then stop what you’re doing and start making something happen today. Don’t run the risk of being penalized in Google’s search results because of this search algorithm update happening next week.

Adapt and Adopt to Responsive Design

Google recommended back in 2014 that they like fully responsive design websites and why:

  • Makes it easier for users to share and link to your content with a single URL.
  • Helps Google’s algorithms accurately assign indexing properties to the page rather than needing to signal the existence of corresponding desktop/mobile pages.
  • Requires less engineering time to maintain multiple pages for the same content.
  • Reduces the possibility of the common mistakes that affect mobile sites.
  • Requires no redirection for users to have a device-optimized view, which reduces load time. Also, user agent-based redirection is error-prone and can degrade your site’s user experience.
  • Saves resources when Googlebot crawls your site. For responsive web design pages, a single Googlebot user agent only needs to crawl your page once, rather than crawling multiple times with different Googlebot user agents to retrieve all versions of the content. This improvement in crawling efficiency can indirectly help Google index more of your site’s content and keep it appropriately fresh.
